Des Femmes newsletter Updates July 2024
Bitcoin Nashville side event, financial sovereignty in Kenya, and job opportunities from the community
Sterling here again 👋 A reminder that Des Femmes is organizing drinks and tacos during Bitcoin Nashville on Thursday, July 25 from 6-8 pm! Feel free to stop by anytime, or DM us on X/Twitter or Instagram if you have questions.
In our June installment, I wrote about why and how I opened a Wyoming LLC, hoping to encourage any burgeoning entrepreneurs to take the first big leap in their professional journey. However, I’m not the only business owner in the Des Femmes community.
Several of the original founders and supporters of the Des Femmes community are badass investors, including Lindsay Lin, Soona Ahmaz, Samantha Yap, and Kinjal Shah. They’ve been growing their firms, and now they’re looking for savvy professionals who want to join the crypto industry.
If you’re looking for a job, check out these job boards below! If someone applies to the Dragonfly opportunities, in particular, someone from that talent team will match her with the right people. Good luck, job seekers!
Job openings with Dragonfly Capital (incl. Engineering, marketing, product manager, DevRel)
Job openings with YAP Global (primarily public relations)
Job openings within Volt Capital portfolio companies (e.g. Coin Ledger, Cozy Finance, LayerZero)
Job openings within Blockchain Capital portfolio companies (e.g. Coinbase, Kraken, EigenLayer)
Next, we have a guest column from Noelyne Sumba, who completed our leadership training program in 2023 and has since been helping mentor women in her community in Kenya. In the face of numerous protests against the Finance Bill last month, Noelyne’s conviction in Bitcoin remains ever stronger.Â
Community Spotlight: Noelyne Sumba
There are some days when years happen, and there are some years when days happen. This saying has never felt more accurate as I reflect on the current political tension in Kenya. The last time I witnessed such intensity was during the post-election violence in 2007-2008.
However, this time feels different. The fearlessness and relentlessness of the protesters indicate a generation—Gen-Z, with whom I now identify—unwilling to back down. They are not just rejecting the Finance Bill implementation in Kenya; they are determined to usher in a new era of change. This change seeks to end decades of exploitation by financial institutions like the IMF and World Bank. Their message is clear: time’s up!
The current protests, unfortunately, were marred by human rights violations such as censorship of the media, internet shutdowns, abductions, and killings.
I have the opportunity to say that I do feel financially cushioned by Bitcoin and may combat the inflation that will inevitably arise from the unrest since it is not affected by the country's political happenings but no one is at peace during a period of unrest, and that is incredibly valuable.
Teaching and mentoring many people in the country about the importance of Bitcoin has been crucial. Its role in not only financial well-being but also in protecting human rights cannot be overstated. However, this journey has been challenging due to the significant knowledge gap. Many are still primarily concerned with daily financial survival.
Looking forward, I hope more people harness the power of Bitcoin, allowing for a profound sense of sovereignty for the continent.
